Guidelines for Authors of Learning Objects - Rachel Smith

Learning objects are small, reusable and modular pieces of learning content that can be assembled and reused in different contexts. In order for organisations to reuse digital learning objects, they require descriptive language (known as metadata) to facilitate the search and retrieval of learning content. Metadata captures the learning object’s characteristics and educational applications. Learning objects and their metadata are stored in a repository where they can be retrieved and used in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Metadata standards, such as the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) standard, ensure global interoperability. The presenters are using a metadata scheme based on the IEEE standard, as part of ongoing research into creating a LOM application profile for the South African higher education context. Two metadata editors, Reload Editor and Metadata Generator Pro, will be explored during the workshop.

The workshop will cover:

  1. A discussion of learning objects, metadata and repositories
  2. An overview of metadata creation tools
  3. A practical demonstration of creating metadata and developing learning content packages
  4. Viewing and exporting learning content packages

Format: A pre-workshop asynchronous discussion will introduce learning objects. This will be followed by a 1,5 hour synchronous workshop (Wednesday 30th June at 10.30 for 11am) and a post-workshop asynchronous discussion will continue for the duration of the conference.
