The traditional architects and guardians of structured and well-researched change processes in education are panting to catch up with the rapid growth in Internet use and applications. The pressures at every level of training and education in the 21st Century are paradoxical. We must reduce costs, increase student numbers and accessibility yet simultaneously improve quality.

Dr Salmon offers 4 strategic scenarios as a way of helping to explore the implications for learning technologies, knowledge construction and transmission, evaluation, assessment and teaching. She claims that we can create our own new online encounters because learning (on- or offline) remains largely unexplored territory!
